Not only does this release around 3,300 million tonnes of CO2 annually but it also creates a social problem: although the global production of food would actually be sufficient, many people still suffer from undernourishment or malnutrition. Mr Alain Körner of the “Administration des services techniques de l’agriculture” sees it as our duty to induce change in order to use our food more consciously and sustainably. He shows that we can save a lot of money by reducing food waste.

European Central Bank’s Climate Risk Stress Test

Following the adoption of the Paris Agreement and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, governments are making strides to transition to low-carbon and more circular economies on a global scale. This transition entails both risks and opportunities for the economy and financial institutions, while physical damage caused by climate change and environmental degradation can have a significant impact on the real economy and the financial system. For the second year in a row, the European Central Bank (ECB) has identified climate-related risks as a key risk driver in the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) Risk Map for the euro area banking system. As a consequence, within the ECB supervisory stress testing framework, the ECB conducts for the first time a climate risk stress test in 2022. Xavier Scholten, part of the Spuerkeess ESG Team and Climate Finance Expert at Spuerkeess takes on the challenge of demystifying the ECB’s latest Climate Risk Stress Test.

Bye bye linear economy. Hello circular economy!

The manufacturing process of the linear economy counts for half of the emissions around the world. The extraction of resources also leads to other problems such as loss of biodiversity, water stress, illegal waste dumping and negative impact on communities, especially in developing countries. Circular economy, on the other hand, is all about sustainability. However, it is not about getting out of prison for free. There needs to be a shift in extraction of materials, production and consumer behaviour. In other words, all stakeholders must be on board. We spoke to Ms Laurence Tock, Director Circular Economy & Sustainable Technologies at the Ministry of the Economy, who provided us with an ABC guide to the circular economy.
