Evergreens Insights: The challenges and barriers of energy renovation according to Arnaud Duban

In this short extract from the podcast Evergreens by Spuerkeess, we give the floor to Arnaud Duban, Director of energieagence. He explains why energy renovation is a major issue for Luxembourg, the remaining obstacles, and how the collaboration with Spuerkeess helps accelerate the transition.

Arnaud, can you introduce energieagence and its mission?

Energieagence supports individuals and businesses in their energy transition. We offer technical and strategic advice to reduce consumption, improve building performance, and integrate renewable energy sources. Our role is to support decision-making through studies and concrete recommendations.

The energy transition depends on training and projection.

Why is this partnership with Spuerkeess strategic?

Because energy renovation is not just about technical aspects—it also requires appropriate financing. Training Spuerkeess housing advisors on these issues allows a comprehensive guidance, combining financial and technical expertise. It’s a winning approach for the customer, who benefits from tailored support.

What are the main barriers to energy renovation today?

The biggest obstacle is projection. Customers struggle to visualise the concrete impact on their bills or comfort. Without precise simulations, they hesitate to start renovation work. Additionally, regulatory complexity and the implementation of subsidies create uncertainty.

How does training banking advisors help accelerate the transition?

We’ve developed a certification programme for housing advisors. They gain technical knowledge about insulation, heating systems, renewable energy, as well as about subsidy mechanisms. This enables them to guide customers from the very first meeting and build a solid case.

What developments do you expect in the coming years?

Demand will surge. The existing housing stock is much larger than new constructions and often energyintensive. Regulations will become stricter, subsidies will evolve, and financing will be essential. Banks have a key role to play as catalysts—informing and supporting their customers.
